Poetry Slam

Last night Jeffrey won 1st place in the "Original Poetry" category at the Poetry Slam last night for 6th to 9th graders in Port Angeles and Sequim. He won over 32 participants in that category. Oddly enough, he didn't know if he should be in it. When we returned from vacation his English teacher said, "I submitted your poem for the Poetry Slam." Jeff replied, "Didn't you need permission?" The teacher replied, "You weren't here." Jeff had to present in front of quite a few people and four judges. He was judged on both the poem and the presentation. As a prize, Jeff won an Ipod Shuffle. He did an amazing job. Here's the poem.

Somber

When rain tears the glass
And the world is filled with sorrow,
Will you make it back to me,
Make sun prevail over cloud?

At dawn when crickets chirp their last,
When the air rings with joyous hope
At the door a man is waiting
Where his love will find him not.

While a baby bird drops from its tree
As the gale whisks away his home
Will you catch him from the air
And ready for the coming storm?

The dusk is breaking
The children shaking
They need someone to comfort them
Into sweet sleep.

But no one is there
To stroke their hair
And assure them that
There's nothing under their beds.

When rain tears the glass
And the world is filled with sorrow,
Will you make it back to me,
Make sun prevail over cloud?

I've been all alone
For far too long
Forgotten and shoved
Upon a high shelf.

While you sit in the chair
Dreaming of the past
I take a short glance
At the person who's forgotten I'm there.

Green is the grass
Blue is the sky
Clear is the water that revives the weak.
But gray is my world

I yearn to be free
From the spell that is
Forgotten love

When rain tears the glass
And the world is filled with sorrow,
Will you make it back to me,
Make sun prevail over cloud?
